Stair nook made functional

This piece was designed for a busy family to tackle an awkward corner in their living room. The final design the family chose made use of both style and function with wine glass and bottle holders and a seating bench with storage under the lid. Rattan-cane webbing covers the cabinet doors allowing any Bluetooth and remote devices stored within to work without leaving the doors open. The shelves, doors, and tabletop are made from torrified maple, which is immune to warping, expansion, and shrinkage. Torrifying, which is done with heat, not only makes the wood incredibly durable but also gives it a beautiful toasted look.  The project was finished off with an accent shiplap wall painted to match.

Patio oasis at the lake

We built this screened-in patio for a client who wanted to enjoy their lakeside view without the bugs. We constructed the railing to the perfect height for viewing the water and used rustic woods to match the cabin's feel. It also had to be built to accommodate potential ground shifts near the water's edge so instead of building solid screened walls, the panels between each post were built to float so the patio could withhold slight movements as well as future adjustments.

Walk-out with a view

This lake-side basement started as a blank slate before being transformed into a modern, cosy living space. Glue-down vinyl plank flooring was chosen for its durability and water resistance; an especially good choice for seasonal cabins that experience big temperature swings throughout the year. The fir stairs were built on site and feature a custom handrail with both pine and metal components. Both of the live-edge pine slabs on the pony wall and under-stair storage unit were cut from our very own Saskatchewan forests, as was the large spruce beam which has been hollowed out to hide the structurally important telepost.

Airy bed & bath

This bed and bath were designed to match the airy, modern feel of the accompanying living space. The client was able to choose the size and layout of the rooms and we completed all the framing, drywalling, painting, flooring, tiling, trim work, and furniture installation. The shower features custom tiling with a handy shower niche while the bedroom includes a built-in cubby tucked underneath the stairwell. Completing the room is a built-in desk made from a live-edge spruce slab locally sourced from a small family-owned Saskatchewan sawmill finished with a semi-gloss varnish for shine and durability.

Low-profile kitchen bar

Our client came to us with a vision to turn an empty area of the house into a transitional piece that blends the living room and kitchen together. This build is a unique solution for a very tight space and adds tons of function and personality to the space. The shelves and shelving brackets were designed to match the home's midcentury look and feature under-shelf LED lighting and custom railing painted in a matte finish. Even though the cabinetry is narrow, it still provides ample storage for wine bottles and glasses. Ceiling puck lights highlight the area and turn this corner into a focal point.

Bold, modern living room

This house had a large foyer that was overwhelming the client with giant walls in a monotonous grey colour. We suggested breaking up the height by using elegant wainscotting in the stairwell paired with a bold colour on the wall. The client loved it and chose an elegant purple for us to paint with. After the transformation in the foyer, they hired us again to add a barn-wood accent wall to their living room. We used multiple techniques to artificially age the wood but our favourite was Shou Sugi Ban which is the Japanese art of firing wood to bring out the grain and add depth of character. Many sample boards were made until we found the perfect assortment of colours and textures to give the wall a perfectly imperfect look.

Barnyard wedding

When this bride asked us to make some custom wedding decor we couldn't say no. The wedding was located in a picturesque barn on the open prairie so the decor was made to match. The signs and sandwich boards used planks of wood that we distressed and stained in a dark, rich colour. Sisal rope handles were added to the tops for rustic flair. We even custom made the easel for one of the larger pieces. The bride then painted her favourite verses and messages on them and placed the signs around the farm.

Open-concept deck

This deck was made to provide a cosy, seasonal seating area while still accommodating large groups for backyard entertaining. We kept good flow throughout the backyard by using an open design, building the deck low to the ground, and utilising wrap-around stairs. The L-shaped bench provides ample seating while housing a large planter box along the garage wall. The existing tree was incorporated into the build by surrounding the trunk with deck pieces that can be easily removed as the tree grows. At night, the stairs light up with LEDs along the upper step while the main deck platform hides all the cords for a neat look.
